What Is Honeycomb Activated Carbon?

Honeycomb Active Carbon is an advanced type of active carbon that has been engineered into a single unit with an orderly arrangement of parallel, open passages – a design that draws inspiration from the geometry of a natural cell. Made by pressing a mixed mix of active carbon dust and adhesive via a honeycomb mold, the resultant slab is then solidified and activated to create a solid, self-supporting structure with dense, even parallel passages throughout the whole length of the slab. The cell density is usually between 100-400 cells/sqm (cpsi), and the resulting blocks can be used in various cross section sizes and channel geometries to meet the particular system needs.

The essential difference between the cellular active carbon and the particle or column form is that the interaction between the gas and the air and the carbon surface is radically different. Instead of having liquid travel along winding, irregular paths among the dense carbon grains, the honeycomb construction provides a straight, unimpeded passage across the passages – greatly lowering the drag and also exposing the passage of the air current to the active carbon walls that surround each passage. The combination of UHP and CPAP is unique for high speed, high volume gas processing applications that would result in an unacceptable power penalty or flow limitation for conventional packaged bed systems.

The production of PAC requires accurate control over the extruding parameters, the composition of the carbon paste, and the activation conditions – which means that the production process is considerably more complex and expensive compared to the granular or granulate form.

Fragility & Mechanical Vulnerability

Although they are structurally rigid, they can easily break or break in the course of transport and assembly, so they need to be carefully packed and managed on site in order to avoid any structural damage prior to deployment.

Limited Liquid-Phase Application

Because of the fundamental nature of the PAC, PAC is not suited for liquid phase adsorption, which limits it’s versatile in comparison with either granular or powdered active carbon forms.

Higher Unit Cost

Specialised extrusions, precision fabrication techniques, and quality control require that the unit costs of the product are higher than those of the traditional active carbon forms, which may constitute an obstacle in the highly price sensitive markets.
