Coconut shell activated carbon is a kind of high performance absorbent material obtained from the husk of ripe coconuts by means of careful carbonation and activation. Unlike active carbon made from coal or timber, cocoa-shell materials start with a natural density of solid and tough material – which creates a unique, delicate interior pore structure.

In the process of manufacture, the coconut shell is carbonized under low oxygen conditions at elevated temperatures, and then is activated by vapor or chemical. This activation stage dramatically expands the internal surface area, creating an intricate network of micropores that can reoccupy 1,000 – 1,200 m ²/g or more.
