Coal-based activated carbon is a high-throughput, industrially proven sorbent material produced from carefully chosen coal raw materials—mainly bituminous coal, brown coal, and anthracite—by a two-stage process of carbonation and activation. In the process of manufacture, the original coal is carbonized at elevated temperatures to eliminate the volatile matter, followed by activation of vapor or CO₂ to create a wide and highly interconnected interior pore structure, which is optimized for large-scale absorption.
